Dragon DRR60363 US HMMWV M1114 Up-Armored Humvee with Roof Gunner Protection Kit - Task Force 2-5, 1st Cavalry Division, Sadr City, Baghdad, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq, 2004 (1:72 Scale) "We will carry out a campaign characterized by shock, by surprise, by flexibility ... and by the application of overwhelming force."
- CENTCOM commander General Tommy Franks commenting on the conduct of Operation: Iraqi Freedom, March 21st, 2003

The M1109 and M1114 HMMWVs are an Up-Armored Armament Carrier configuration of the HMMWV family. The vehicles are equipped with additional armor both on the sides and underneath to protect the crew from small arms ammunition and mines.

The M1114 is the successor version to the XM1109 HMMWV Up-Armored Armament Carrier. The M1114 is an Up-Armored HMMWV that provides ballistic, artillery, and mine blast protection to the vehicle occupants. The principal modifications to the ECV HMMWV include an armor package, high capacity brakes, upgraded suspension and lift points, a reinforced frame, and a large capacity air conditioning unit. The weapon mount, located on the roof of the vehicle, is adaptable to mount either the M60, 7.62mm machine gun; M2 .50 caliber machine gun; or the MK 19 Grenade Launcher. The weapons platform can be traversed 360 degrees. This confirguration of the HMMWV is equipped with the self-recovery winch.

The Up-Armored program (M1114) was developed as a result of peacekeeping efforts throughout various parts of the world. A need was identified for an armored, mobile vehicle that provided a high level of ballistic protection against sniper fire and mine blasts. One of the great pieces of equipment that was used down in Bosnia was this M1114, Up-Armored HMMWV. It is basically a standard HMMWV that is built on a heavy-duty HMMWV chassis so -- and it has some extra ballistic protection. It is far superior to a normal HMMWV in terms of its ability to withstand a blast from a mine.

Dragon Armor's newest 1L72 scale Humvee is a multi-purpose M1114 up-armored vehicle, which incorporate an enhanced level of intrinsic armor. This vehicle includes a special protection kit for the roof gunner. It possesses the same high level of detail both inside and outside. However, this latest one offers collectors the chance to get something more unique and recreate a sight that is so common in Iraq - modified and up-armored Humvees. This fresh and customized vehicle is ideal for a realistic diorama in Iraq or Afghanistan. Sold Out!

Historical Account: "Sadr City" - Sadr City is a suburb district of the city of Baghdad, Iraq. It was built in 1959 by Prime Minister Abdul Karim Qassim and later unofficially renamed Sadr City after deceased Shia leader Mohammad Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr. Sadr City is one of nine administrative districts in Baghdad. A public housing project neglected by Saddam Hussein, Sadr City holds more than 1 million Shiite residents, many of them poor.

In April, 2003, the 2d Squadron, 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment established their headquarters at the abandoned Sumer cigarette factory located on the Eastern side of Sadr City. In honor of the history of the factory, the military named their new camp, Camp Marlboro. In addition to the 800 Soldiers in the Squadron, the camp housed 120 military police of the 549th Military Police Company, Crusader Company of the 2-37th Armored Regiment (2-37 AR), and two six man teams of Civil Affairs Soldiers from the 411th Civil Affairs Battalion.

In late March 2004, the 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, under the command of Colonel Robert Abrams arrived at Camp War Eagle, on the north-east corner of Sadr City, to assume responsibility for the governance and security of Sadr City and the North East section of Baghdad from the U.S. 1st Squadron 2nd Cavalry Regiment. The new cavalry brigade included the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment (1-12 CAV) and 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment (2-5 CAV) commanded by LTC Gary Volesky.

On April 4th, 2004, the Mahdi Army ambushed a U.S. Army patrol in Sadr City, killing eight American soldiers, and wounding 57 more. This sparked fierce urban fighting between the Mehdi Army and soldiers 2-37 AR of the 1st Armored Division and 2-5 and 1-12 CAV of the 1st Cavalry Division (1CD).

In late 2004, the Mahdi Army enacted a cease-fire with U.S. troops, and offered to help repair and rebuild the city's main infrastructure which was leaving millions without electricity, water or sewage. On October 10th, the base was hit by three mortars launched from within the city, which saw the U.S. beef up security and attach an additional 28 tanks and 14 Bradley Fighting Vehicles to the camp. The following day, on October 11, the Weapons Handover Program began in the city, which was designed to purchase weapons from militants.
