2025: Operation Rising Lion

On June 13th, 2025, Israel attacked targets at more than a dozen locations across Iran. Under the code name Operation Rising Lion, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Mossad damaged key nuclear sites and military installations and killed several of Iran's top military leaders in their the private residences. The attack was the largest on Iran since the Iran-Iraq War during the 1980s.

In the early morning of June 13th, explosions, enormous flames, and repeated blasts were reported across Tehran, including near military bases and in neighborhoods housing senior commanders. Iranian nuclear facilities were targeted in Natanz, Khondab, and Khorramabad. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Hossein Salami, Iranian state media reported that the attacks killed Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri; nuclear scientists Fereydoon Abbasi and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi; and other Iranian military personnel and civilians. The attacks resumed in the afternoon and evening of June 13th, with strikes reported near Tabriz Airport and at the Natanz and Fordow nuclear sites. In retaliation, Iran launched strikes on Israel under the name Operation True Promise II.

The F-16I is a two-seat variant of the Block 52 developed for the Israeli Defense Force  Air Force (IDF/AF). Israel issued a requirement in September 1997 and selected the F-16 in preference to the F-15I in July 1999. An initial "Peace Marble V" contract was signed on January 14th, 2000, with a follow on contract signed on December 19th, 2001, for a total procurement of 102 aircraft.
