British Matilda Mk. II Infantry Tank - Malta Tank Squadron, Royal Tank Regiment, Malta, 1942 British Matilda Mk. II Infantry Tank - Malta Tank Squadron, Royal Tank Regiment, Malta, 1942 (1:43 Scale)

The Mark I Matilda was developed in response to a 1934 requirement for a close-support infantry tank. Well armored for its day, it was, nevertheless, a small, simple tank. Despite being sturdy enough to withstand hits from most German tank guns in the early stages of WWII, it was too poorly armed to be of much use as the war progressed.

By 1943, and at the time of the invasion of Sicily, the upgraded M5A1 was becoming the standard light tank of the American armored divisions. Because of limited firepower, the M5A1 eventually took on reconnaissance and escort duties in Italy and, after the invasion of Normandy, throughout Europe.

As early as 1934/35, General Heinz Guderian envisioned two basic types of armor to act as the lead elements of the future German Panzer Divisions. British Cruiser Mk. VI Crusader III Tank - 1st Armoured Division, Tunisia, 1943 British Cruiser Mk. VI Crusader III (A15) Tank - 1st Armoured Division, Tunisia, 1943 (1:43 Scale)

The Crusader's attractive design belied the fact that by the time it first appeared in 1941 it was already outdated. Fast and mobile (their suspensfion was so tough that theoretical maximum speed was often exceeded), they were thinly armored and lacked firepower, being no match for their German counterparts. Reliability was also a problem.
