When the Korean War began, the US military had no medium tanks in production. The M47 appeared as an interim measure even though work had already begun on its successor, the M48. The first 'Pattons' were completed in July, 1952. Unfortunately, the speed of development resulted in numerous teething problems for the early Pattons, among them poor reliability and a short operating range. Nevertheless, the M47 proved to be an indispensable aid on the battlefield, time and again destroying its opposite number with ruthless abandon.
