2009: The Year Ahead - Part One
Its that time of year again when we close the books on the outgoing year so we can make our yearly prognostications for the months ahead. Unless you've been on hiatus in 2008, then you're no doubt aware that the downturn in the global economy has had a dramatic impact on the diecast world. Needless to say, many manufacturers are loathe to take huge risks when a recession hits, preferring instead to hedge their bets by offering more repaints and reissues, or offering molds they feel they can bank on without raising their stakes. This is particularly true for those manufacturers who do not own their own factories, where cost control can fly out the window when the price of labor and commodities can play havoc with their business plan.

Although there are a handful of players that prefer to release their new introductions perodically throughout the year, many modelmakers still use the upcoming International Toy Fairs (Paris/ French, London/British, Nuremberg/German and New York/American) to showcase their latest wares. Typically, many manufacturers wait until the late January/ early February timeframe to unveil their newest products, piggybacking off their spike in holiday sales while hurriedly building their next-generation prototypes before the Chinese New Year shuts down many Asian factories.

In the military realm, expect companies such as Hobby Master to gain market share, thanks in part to them owning their own factory. Their savvy business plan also involves listening intently to their collecting constituency and refraining from producing molds that other companies have already built. Newcomers such as SkyMax Models will do their utmost to gain traction in the military aviation space, looking to keep their retail pricing as low as possible to reach a mass audience. Like Hobby Master, SkyMax Models is looking to release aircraft others have shied away from, thus far sticking with familiar prop-driven birds that should become war winners.

Perennial favorite, Corgi, is a wild card of sorts, now that they have a cash infusion from Hornby keeping them in the game. They're still looking to pump out their remaining 2008 introductions before offering everyone a glimpse into their 2009 lineup, so it remains to be seen which direction they're headed in the calendar year. Likewise, its not clear if they plan to jump back into the ground vehicle market, and if they do, if it will encompass reintroductions of past favorites.

Stalwart Dragon doesnt appear to be shaking up the diecast battlefield, still producing a littany of Tigers and Panthers in the large scale while offering untold numbers of dioramas in the smaller regime. Six years in and they're finally offering a 1:72 scale Panzer IV, which will undoubtedly be offered in a myriad of schemes and configurations. Certainly good news for many, but we're hoping they back up this armored fist with even more new molds. In the air, they seem to have grounded much of their aircraft, no doubt due to the rapid expansion of the Hobby Master air force.

An then there's Minichamps, who may or may not be soldiering on in the military ranks. This past year saw only one new release, a repaint of their King Tiger tank, and its anyone's guess if they plan to remain a player in the armored arena, despite boasting a huge base of of loyal collectors. We're keeping our fingers crossed that they are in it for the long haul. If not, expect the remaining stocks of their hardware to sell like hotcakes...[posted 12/26/2008]

Happy New Year: 2009 Product Introductions
Welcome to 2009. We hope everyone had a great time ushering in the new year and look forward to what the next twelve months bring in the world of diecast collecting. As you may have already noticed, we've begun adding subcategories to some of our major manufacturer sections which are called 2009 production introductions. These new subcategories will showcase any new product being introduced during the calendar year, so you can distinguish, at-a-glance, which items are being made available for the first time from those that form each manufacturer's backlist catalog. With several major international toy fairs scheduled during the first part of the year and dozens of new product on the horizon, we feel this information is vital and will help you navigate our ever expanding product portfolio faster than ever.....[posted 1/2/2009]

Corgi Pays Homage to the 'Red Baron'
Ninety years after his passing, German ace, Manfred von Richtofen, is still considered to be one of the most formidable aces of any conflict. To commemorate his passing and build upon their highly successful line of World War I aircraft, Corgi is releasing a limited edition, two-plane set consisting of the 'Red Baron's' Fokker Dr. I tri-plane and Canadian pilot Arthur Brown's Sopwith Camel (#AA39913). Slated for a March release, we're placing a strong buy recommendation on this set, seeing as how the rest of the Corgi line of World War I aircraft are selling at an especially brisk pace.....[posted 12/30/2008]

SkyMax Models Calls Up for More Reinforcements
With 2008 drawing to a close, SkyMax Models doesn't seem to be the least bit hesitant about calling up reserves. According to their newly launched website (www.SkyMaxModels.com) the company has plans to offer a second version of the Russian La 5FN, this one flown by the Soviet ace Vitaliy Popkov (SM2002). Also up for consideration is Free French ace Pierre Clostermann's Hawker Tempest V fighter (SM4002), another fine addition to anyone's replica air force. We hear tell more new molds and repaints are in the offing, all designed to be sporadically released over the course of 2009....[posted 12/27/2008]

SkyMax Models' Tempest in a Teapot
Despite facng a slow start getting their F8F Bearcat out the door, SkyMax Models has an ambitious agenda for 2009 and beyond. We've learned that a 1:72 scale Hawker Tempest Mark V fighter is in the works, one based upon George Edward Kosh's mount destroyed while attempting to shoot down a V-1 Buzz Bomb over England in 1944 (SM4001). No doubt other versions are being reviewed closely, as this fledgling modelmaker looks to compete with both Corgi and Hobby Master in the small scale aviation arena....[posted 12/20/2008]

The Motor Pool - You've Got Mail!
As 2008 draws to a close, we're about to implement some key changes to our business which will hopefully make your visit to our site even more enjoyable and rewarding. For starters, we are transitioning to an industry standard newsletter delivery service, one that offers us many more features and capabilities. Just as importantly, this service has a much higher penetration rate, meaning you are much more likely to receive our periodic newsletters instead of them being blocked by several web hosting solutions.

With that in mind, we are now asking everyone to take a few moments and sign up for our new newsletter service, which can be found in the left hand margin of our site. Most of you should already be signed up for the service if your email address has not changed when it was first provided to us. If nothing has changed, then a message will appear indicating that you are already a newsletter subscriber. If your contact information has changed, please enter the new email address into the system, along with all the pertinent information now required to receive our communiques....[posted 12/19/2008]

Premium Classixxs: The Fennek Resurfaces!
We've been hoping with baited breath for more manufacturers to enter the 1:35 scale military space and now we've found one. Long known for their fine line of 1:43 scale civilian vehicles, german-based Premium Classixxs has entered the military market with a superb 1:35 scale rendition of the Bundeswehr's Fennek Spahwagen reconnaissance vehicle. Designed for forward observation and light mobile operations in conjunction with other assets, the Fennek is an important component of the modern German Army's land forces and is now dutifully represented by this famed German modelmaker. Composed of resin, this hand built replica contains 60 exquisitely detailed parts, modeling everything from the 40mm automatic grenade launcher to its Deutz diesel engine. The best part is that only 300 pieces have been produced making it a relative rarity in the military collecting world.

Update: Just when we gave up all hope that the Fennek would arrive comes news from our distributor that its now on its way to us! We expect to take delivery of our allotment just prior to Christmas and will do everything in our power to get out all of the pre-orders the moment they arrive. It may be late to put under the Christmas tree, but at least they materialized...[posted 12/18/2008]

Easy Model Grapples with the Grizzly Bear
Although they seem to be taking their time releaseing new product into the retail channel, MRC's Easy Model division finally unveiled images of their upcoming Brummbar or 'Grizzly Bear' assault gun. Rendered in 1:72 scale, three vehicles will soon be offered, as can be seen in our Easy Model military vehicle section. The Brummbar fills a gap in many a collector's range of small scale diecast military vehicles, and will likely receive a warm welcome by collectors and wargamers alike.

For you rotorheads, pictures were finally supplied for their soon-to-be-released Mil Mi-8 utility helicopter, the mainstay for many a Warsaw Pact formation during the Cold War. Flown under the NATO reporting name of 'Hip-C', the Mi-8 performed yeoman service ferrying troops and supplies to the forward edge of the battlefield area, much like the US UH-1 Huey medium lift helicopter. Look for both products to enter service in early 2009....[posted 12/15/2008]

Hobby Master Takes the Wraps Off of Their Beaufighters
With the holidays looming large, Hobby Master decided to place a pair of gifts under the Christmas tree. Earlier this week, the company unveiled photographs of their upcoming 1:72 scale Beaufighters, one depicting a low-level torpedo bomber (HA2301) and the other an early war night fighter (HA2302). Both are scheduled to see active service in early 2009.

In other news, images were also supplied for their soon-to-be-released MiG 15 in captured US markings, based upon the plane flown by a defecting North Korean pilot in late 1953 and put through its paces by test pilot Tom Collins (HA2403)...[posted 12/12/2008]

SkyMax Models Limited Edition and Autographed "Mike" Granat F8F Bearcat
Perhaps it was appropriate that on the 67th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor we were fortunate enough to announce one of our boldest initiatives yet. Sometime in early 2009, we plan to offer a limited edition, autographed version of SkyMax Models soon-to-be-released replica of Lieutenant Commander Mike Granat's USN (ret) F8F Bearcat, "Felix the Cat". We've posted this item in our SkyMax Models section which is appended with a short discussion by Lt. Cdr. Granat offering his impressions and insight into this world famous aircraft. Each box will be autographed by the pilot and numbered. Frankly, we aren't certain just yet as to how many autographed replicas we plan to offer, which will probably number between 100-250, based upon worldwide consumer demand. We strongly recommend pre-ordering this item as soon as possible since we need to establish a production number before the holidays. Please note that we are asking the pilot to sign and number the outer box of the replica, not the aircraft.

We will also be conducting an in-depth interview with Lt. Cdr. Granat, who flew many of the most important naval aircraft of World War II and beyond, including the F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, F7F Tigercat, F9F Panther & Cougar and the UF-1 Albatross. We hope to have the interview posted to coincide with the release of the autographed replica...[posted 12/7/2008]

Armour Collection: Heavy Metal in 2009
Contrary to popular belief, Armour Collection will continue to retain diecast metal as its principal building block for their combat aircraft. Although the company is still acting coy concerning their 2009 lineup, they will reportedly announce their new product range at the end of December, likely the week after Christmas. Rumors continue to circulate that the new range will include a F-111 Aardvark fighter-bomber, a key Cold War bulwark against a then hostile eastern European hegemony from the late 60's through the early 90's. If true, its not clear if the Armour Collection replica will feature variable geometry wings, or other articulating control surfaces common among some of their competitors. In any event, their highly anticipated 2009 catalog will purportedly be available shortly, no doubt an excellent read during the cold winter months just ahead.....[posted 12/3/2008]

Tamiya Barks, "Rommel, you magnificent bastard. I read your book!"
Quiet for some time, Tamiya seems to be back with a vengeance, if pre-Tamiya Fair rumors are true. Long available as a kit, Tamiya will soon be offering a 1:48 scale, pre-assembled replica of the German Sd. Kfz. 250/3 light command half-track used by Erwin Rommel in the hot desert sands of North Africa (TAM26536). Other 1:48 scale, pre-assembled builds are reportedly in the works, including US M8 and M20 armored cars, a GMC 2-1/2 ton truck, a German Steyr Type 1500 A/01 utility car and a Kommandeurwagen, used to ferry high ranking dignitiaries to and fro. Similarly, a 1:48 scale Fieseler Storch liason aircraft is due out for the holidays, certainly a welcome addition to anyone's aircraft collection.....[posted 11/21/2008]

IXO Models Ponders, "One if By Land, Two if By Sea?"
Even though the first delivery of their 1:144 scale bomber line has been delayed until January, that hasn't stopped IXO Models from stoking the fires and unveiling two more images of their upcoming aircraft. The first multi-engined aircraft is a German Dornier Do-217E medium bomber, designed from scratch as a replacement for the venerable Dornier Do 17 bomber. The second aircraft shown for the first time is a US Consolidated PBY flying boat, painted in an early war olive green pattern. As an aside, it seems strange that the manufacturer should elect to go with this pattern for the PBY as opposed to a 'Black Cat' or sky blue naval variant, perhaps two more popular schemes. In any event, the two new machines will undoubtedly meet with great fanfare when they finally do get released, and helps keep the fires burning until the first wave of planes soar overhead....[posted 11/18/2008]

Hobby Master Catches Hell and is Proud of It!
Sure, it's a play on words, but Hobby Master has quickly become the turn to company that is willing to produce some of the less obscure aircraft and liveries in the military market. For instance, when it comes to World War II, the manufacturer has annouced a third pattern in their upcoming Curtiss SB2C Helldiver dive-bomber series (HA2203), this one based on a plane embarked upon the USS Bunker Hill. Fast forwarding to the Vietnam War, the company intends to offer a Royal Australian Air Force F-4E Phantom fighter-bomber (HA1908), awash in a dark southeast asia camouflage pattern. And, if that isn't enough, they're toying with a Taiwanese Mirage 2000-5 jet fighter, handsomely adorned in a blue-on-blue paint scheme (HA1609). Other aircraft are also in the mix, all scheduled for an early 2009 release...[posted 11/16/2008]

Hobby Master Takes the Lead
It takes a certain measure of courage to try something new when you could just as easily play it safe by hanging back with the tried-and-true. In the case of Hobby Master, the company is sticking its neck out by offering a pair of diminutive armored fighting vehicles that others might have easily ignored. Due out in January, the first vehicle is a US-built M8 light armored car (HG3801) while the second, a derivative of the M8, will be an M20 armored car (HG3802). Death of the Red Baron
Long a legend in the aviation world, Manfred von Richtoffen's passing has become an enigma that has still to be solved. Be that as it may, Frontline Figures has decided to pay homage to 'The Red Baron' by introducing a unique diorama that shows the famed airman just minutes after he crash landed during the latter stages of World War I. Produced in 1:32 scale and mounted atop a handsome wooden base, the vignette shows the Baron lying prostrate on his back alongside his smashed Albatross, as several Australian soldiers rummage through his aircraft for souvenirs. Intended to be made available just after Thanksgiving, we're offering this powerful statement to the passing of this legend for only $179.99, $199.99 if you wait until its released. IXO Models Starts Up Their Outboard Engines
After several false starts, it appears as if IXO Models are weeks away from going through their final flight check and making their range of 1:144 scale bombers available in North America. According to our distributor, six aircraft have made the November cut, including the C-54 troop transport, Ju 88 medium bomber, Mitsubishi Betty bomber, Petlyakov Pe 8 heavy bomber, BR 20 Cicogna medium bomber, as well as their 1:72 scale rendition of the AR-234 jet bomber. The next batch of bombers to make muster are being spaced out for a January/ February release, although this could slide by a few weeks.

On the ground, our distributor maintains that their diecast military vehicles will begin appearing in early 2009, although no word as yet concerning their proposed order and product type has been disseminated. News concerning the lineup might surface at the upcoming IHobby Expo.

Its been a long while since they last released a military vehicle coupled with the fact that this is one of their more admired products, so we anticipate strong sales when it does arrive.

Now the sticking point. The manufacturer has raised the MSRP for this item, which means we are being charged more from a dealer's standpoint. We are honoring any in-house orders placed for this item at the pre-order price of $89.99, however, we now have to mark this item up to its new MAP level in accordance with Minichamps pricing policy. Fortunately, we are running our Grand Reopening 15% off sale until October 12th, so you can still nab this baby for $97.74 if you enter the coupon code at checkout. Wait until the 13th, and the price jumps to $114.99, but you'll get free UPS ground shipping to destinations within the Continental US. Think it through and let us know...[posted 10/3/2008]

McFarlane Toys Responds to a Call of Duty
Some time ago, rumor had it that McFarlane Toys was looking to enter the World War II market with a range of highly detailed action figures. Apparently, the tale is true, although the whole story wasn't related until now. Teaming up with the makers of the wildly popular Call of Duty video game franchise, McFarlane Toys will soon be offering a set of four 6-inch action figures, each tied to a particular scene in the upcoming game, Call of Duty: World at War. Included in the bunch are a US Marine with a Thompson machine gun, another brandishing a flamethrower, still another advancing on a position armed with a M1 Garand, and a British Spec Ops soldier kitted in winter gear. All four figures having four-six moving parts and are currently slated for a November ship to coincide with the game's release. For $16 apiece, you simply cant go wrong with these spectacular renditions...[posted 9/29/2008]

Rossi Snares the Crown
Five-time World Champion MotoGP rider, Valentino Rossi, added another notch to his belt when he took first place at the A-Style Grand Prix of Japan, thus making him the 2008 World Champion. For motorbike collectors, this is certainly awesome news, as it will no doubt raise the value of many previously released Rossi-related merchandise produced by Minichamps. It also means many of the soon-to-be-released products will likely be snapped up at an even faster pace, particularly his 2008 ride and any 2008 Rossi figures and helmets. Of course, there are other Rossi-related paraphenalia soon to cross the finish line, many of which have already seen stellar pre-sales. We know times are tough, but sometimes it pays to break open the piggy bank so you can squirrel away one of these prized collectibles....[posted 9/28/2008]

Hobby Master Streaks Down MiG Alley
As we reported several weeks ago, Hobby Master plans to turn back the hands of time once again by modelling the MiG 15. The scourge of western air forces during the Korean Conflict, Hobby Master's 1:72 scale swept wing fighter will initially be offered in two versions: one portraying Russian Colonel Yevgeni Pepelyayev's fighter when he took wing with the North Korean Air Force and a second flown by the North Korean's 351st Aviapolk (Night Fighters), based out of Antung, China, during 1953. Both aircraft will retail for $41.99, with a pre-order price of just $37.99. ....[posted 9/25/2008]

21st Century Breaks Radio Silence Regarding its Big Guns
We recognize that a great many of you have been waiting with baited breath concerning 21st Century Toys' 1:18 scale products, so we'll get right to it without further ado. The Company today confirmed that the 88mm FlaK gun is entering production shortly and will be painted in DAK yellow. For those of you hoping for a field grey version, you may have to bide your time a bit longer, or start priming your air brushes for repaint purposes. The King Tiger is next up in the production cycle, and it is hoped that it will come in at or near the wholesale cost of the 88mm gun. With times the way they are, we've decided to up its price by a few bucks to play it safe but will honor all pre-orders already placed at the lower price. No news yet concerning the 1:18 scale aircraft previously announced....[posted 9/23/2008]

The Collectors Showcase Studies Interior Design
As part of their ongoing effort to create the most realistic combat replicas, The Collectors Showcase unveiled a trio of 1:30 scale Sturmgeschutz III assault guns for the holiday season. Based upon the G variant and equipped with the Saukopf mantlet, the three vehicles modeled pay homage to the Battle of Normandy, Battle of Nijmegen and Ardennes counteroffensive of 1944. Each vehicle comes with a fully detailed interior crew compartment fleshed out with ammo rounds, crew stations and more. Amazingly, the manufacturer is indicating that only 600 sets are being produced in total, 200 for each vehicle.

As part of the announcement, the Company also plans to produce a full series of 1:30 scale combat figures, replicating some of the more important units that took part in the Battle for Nijmegen during the failed Market-Garden operation. Like their Tigers at Dawn series, we will need pre-orders for these sets tout de suite otherwise you run the risk of not being able to purchase them when they crash the ramparts this November....[posted 9/17/2008]

New Line: Marushin Aircraft
Long a player in the Japanese diecast market, Marushin will finally be offering their extensive line of 1:48 scale diecast military aircraft to the North American market. For those of you unfamiliar with the line, Marushin makes a cavalcade of high quality Japanese aircraft replicas of World War II fame, making them one of the few alternatives in the 1:48 scale space. Unlike Armour Collection, however, many of these birds must be hand-assembled by the end-user, who must attach the wings, landing gear and a few other non-connected parts to the fully assembled fuselage. According to our supplier, the first batch of combat planes are expected to lay siege to our market sometime in late September.

Update: Apparently, the manufacturer has listened to their constituency and does indeed plan to reproduce the Betty bombers, along with those items that may have been out-of-stock for quite some time. We hear that the bombers may come to fruition by the end of the 1st quarter 2009, although there's no way to know for sure an exact ship date at this point in the process. So, if you want to place a pre-order for their twin-engine bombers, now might be as good a time as any, since the manufacturer is looking for some sort of indication how many planes they're going to need to fulfill everyone's needs .....[posted 9/9/2008]

This year, we're offering to ship this item free-of-charge via UPS ground to destinations within the Continental US, an important consideration when you take into account the size and weight of this product. We expect these vehicles to do quite well at retail, if sales of any of their previous 1:16 scale caisons serve as any indication....[posted 9/8/2008]

Minichamps Looks Back at the Giants of Racing
Anyone that owns a Minichamps test bike can attest to their value, particularly when its linked to a famous rider. Based on their 2001 RC211V summer rides, the test bikes are finished in a glowing orange and black paint scheme. Best of all, only 504 pieces are being produced for each rider, making them two of the shortest run limited editon bikes ever offered by Minichamps. The manufacturer has asked us to submit our order to them this weekend, so its important we receive your pre-orders as quickly as possible, if you hope to nab one of these red hot favorites. It is conceivable that we will not have any available for general sale if the manufacturer decides to allocate shipments to their dealers.....[posted 9/5/2008]

Minichamps Throttles Up Its Rossi Offerings
With the second half of the 2008 MotoGP season already in high gear, Minichamps is steadily keeping pace by unveiling a field of new Valentino Rossi-related products. Besides the usual mix of motorcycles, the company has begun offering several new poses for their "golden-haired champion", including one mimicking the rider taking a hairpin curve. Another figure sports a Superman-esque cape wafting in the wind, while still another captures a moment in time when he knelt in front of his bike to kiss its front fender. One of the more edgier sculpts shows him sidesaddling a bike with his arms flailing above his head, designed, no doubt, to show him celebrating a recent victory. All of the new figures are expected shortly, so make sure to check out these newly posed figures at your earliest opportunity.

In related news, it appears as if six-time World Champion Valentino Rossi has a lock on the 2008 MotoGP series. We have decided to honor any pre-orders already placed for this item unless, of course, the manufactuer decides to increase the cost again prior to its delivery. Unfortunately, we have also had to increase the retail price and pre-order price for this item to reflect the price hike. Altaya Proclaims, "Panzers Vorwarts!"
No sooner do we discuss IXO Models' plans for world domination in 2009 comes news that Altaya has re-branded the series, "Panzer". According to the Altaya web site (http://www.altaya.fr/ficha.php?id=139&pagina=todas#enl), 16 armored fighting vehicles are in the offing, some having been previously released judging by the assortment and paint schemes. However, several new vehicles appear to be entering the mix, including a Hetzer tank destroyer, 88mm FLaK gun, Sd. Kfz. 250/5 halftrack, and Sd. Kfz. 7/1 prime mover. Since all of the replicas in the series look to be based upon German vehicles, there's a good chance that this could be the start of several parallel lines, each based upon a combatant from World War II. IXO Models Flies in the Face of Adversity
Braving higher materials costs, the Olympics, and yes, even factory closings, IXO Models will reportedly ship their first batch of 1:144 scale WWII bombers sometime in October. According to our distributor, the first six planes will include the US C-54 troop transport, German Ju-88 medium bomber, Japanese Betty medium bomber, Russian Petlyakov Pe-8 heavy bomber and the Italian BR20 Cicogna medium bomber. The bomber stream will also include a 1:72 scale Arado AR-34 jet bomber, the only 1:72 scale bomber currently on the drawing board from IXO Models. On the downside, the second batch of bombers aren't expected until February, at the earliest, and we arent sure as yet which planes will make the cut.

A is for Aardvark?
An Australian dealer has indicated that Armour Collection will be offering up a 1:48 scale rendition of the F-111 Aardvark strike aircraft in 2009. While the subject doesnt come as much of a surprise considering its place in military aviation history, the choice of material used to produce it does. According to the dealer, the manufacturer will allegedly be using resin instead of diecast metal to produce the warbird, no doubt due to the escalating costs of zinc alloy, the basic building block of diecast metal aircraft. While we have yet to confirm this lead with the manufacturer, the fact remains that this could be a very interesting development for both the manufacturer in question and other model makers, as they continue to grapple with the huge run up in costs of both oil and zinc in 2008.....[posted 7/22/2008]

The first set, dubbed "Tigers at Dawn Series", consists of three different Tiger I heavy tanks, one based upon a mount used by Michael Wittmann, a second seeing action on the eastern front during the winter maelstrom, and a third seeing action at Arnhem during September 1944.

Only 300 sets are being produced in total, 100 for each of the previously mentioned tanks. With such low production numbers and the approach of the holiday shopping season, these vehicles will likely sell out fast.

Also up for consideration is their all-new "SS Review Series", which depicts a detachment of soldiers standing in review from the 1.SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte. Gaso.Line: Line Discontinuation
We know we're going to disappoint several longstanding customers but we've come to the realization that we can no longer stock the Gaso.Line range. There are several key reasons that led to this decision, chief among them the rising imbalance between the Euro and the US dollar, increasingly higher shipping costs associated with transporting goods from Europe to North America, and the lack of new product making it to us. Rather than constantly hold out hope that things will change for the better, we thought it prudent to simply sell off our existing stock of Gaso.Line products at 20% off their normal selling price. Since we dont have a great deal of inventory on hand, we are going to ask our customers to call in their orders to see if their selections are still in stock rather than placing their orders through our web site.

There is a possibility that things could change down the road should several notable factors change for the better. These pieces are still exquisite and made in very small numbers, making them highly sought after collectibles. Having said that, we feel that the prices we would have to charge to maintain the line would be far in excess of what most collectors would be willing to pay, particularly in today's economic climate. At this time, it isn't clear which new products are expected to make landfall first, nor is it certain that any of their Aviation Archive aircraft will make the first transit. That said, the news comes as a pleasant surprise indeed, which will hopefully lead to more new releases showing up for the holiday timeframe and beyond....[posted 6/13/2008]

IXO Models Makes Another Bombing Run
Despite the lack of product in the North American marketplace and change of distributors earlier this spring, that hasnt stopped Altaya / IXO Models from revving up the production run for a massive bombing raid. According to the Altaya website, aviation enthusiasts can look forward to seeing a German Messerschmitt Me 323 powered transport aircraft, Mitsubishi Ki 67 'Peggy' medium bomber, US Consolidated PB2Y Coronado flying boat, Italian Cant Z. 506 floatplane, Junkers Ju 86 medium bomber, US Boeing B-17C Flying Fortress heavy bomber, and French Farman F.222 medium bomber, all replicated in exquisite 1:144 scale. We're assuming that these new additions wont make it out until early 2009 at the earliest, but stranger things have happened and they could still see the light of day by the end of this year. The pre-order window is now open....[posted 6/12/2008]

Hobby Master Kicks it up Another Notch
Seemingly on a perpetual roll, Hobby Master will reportedly come out with even more diecast military aircraft and vehicles this summer. On the ground, tank commanders can wrap their mitts around a 1:72 scale rendition of the M46 Patton tank, which is regaled in a tiger striped pattern to scare North Korean regulars during the Korean War. Likewise, Hobby Master's second version of the Chaffee light tank will be painted in a similar pattern, making them a potent one-two punch on the diecast battelfield.

In the air, aviation buffs can lay claim to a 1:48 scale Mk XVIII Supermarine Spitfire, which was used with great distinction during the Korean Conflict. Also taking wing will be a 1:72 scale German F-4F Phantom fighter-bomber, a third take on the Japanese Nakajima B5N2 Kate level bomber, and a French SBD-5 Dauntless dive-bomber. On a personal note, its truly amazing to see a relative newcomer such as Hobby Master beating the pants off of some of the more entrenched favorites, continually beating them to the punch by listening to their collecting constituency...[posted 6/10/2008]

Hobby Master Hops On the Helo Bandwagon
According to the Hobby Master Collector website, Hobby Master is rumored to be toiling away on two new helicopter types this summer. Word has it that they will be modeling a 1:72 scale rendition of the Piasecki H-21 utility helicopter. Nicknamed the "Flying Banana", this early Vietnam War era troop carrying helo earned its name due its distinctive banana shape fuselage. Alongside the H-21, rotor-wing aficionadoes can look forward to laying their mitts on a Mil Mi-24 Hind attack helicopter. Designed to take on armor and carry a small squad of infantrymen into battle, the Hind became synonymous with Warsaw Pact AirLand battle doctrine in the 80's, and certainly would have become one of the cornerstones to a Soviet invasion of Western Europe should the ball have ever gone up. Look for further information regarding both new helicopter builds in the weeks to come....[posted 5/28/2008]

Carousel 1 Takes Wing Again
Speculation concerning Carousel 1's continuing interest in the diecast aviation market can finally be put to rest. Earlier today, the Company indicated their intent to come out with 1:48 scale replicas of the Curtiss P-36 Hawk fighters, a pre-World War II low wing monoplane fighter that saw limited service during the war. Three versions will be offered sometime in September, all of which can be viewed and pre-ordered from our Carousel 1 section....[posted 5/22/2008]

Unimax Says, "Its All in the Details"
Despite being pushed back to a September release, Unimax was kind enough to snap some photos of their upcoming 1:16 scale Extreme Metal Sherman medium tank (#UNI85007). Billed as their inaugural Allied tank of World War II, the first Sherman will come with four pre-painted/ pre-posed figures, tank traps, entrenching utensils, detailed engine and numbered certificate of authenticity. The price of the vehicle has been set at $449.99 when it comes out, but if you pre-order now, you can nab one for just $419.99 plus free UPS ground shipping if you reside within the continental US. New Line: Premium Classixxs
The best part is that only 300 pieces have been produced and, if you order before May 23rd, we'll throw in a free pack of dark green netting so you can camouflage your prized possession....[posted 5/15/2008]

Century Wings: Important Policy and Pricing Changes
Recently, there have been some important pricing and policy changes taking place with the Century Wings line of diecast military aircraft. Effective August 1st, all retailers will be required to sell the line at the Manufacturer's Minimum Advertised Price (MAP), making it no longer possible for us to offer their products to our customers at pre-order prices. Anyone that has already pre-ordered their upcoming aircraft or plans to do so before August 1st, can still obtain the items at the lower pre-order pricing, which is 10% below the suggested retail price. It also appears as if the entire line will be priced at $69.99, with occassional limited edition aircraft such as the new Jolly Roger F-14 priced at a slightly elevated level, in this case $74.99. We regret having to raise the retail prices for the line later this summer, which is being caused by a number of factors including higher production costs, testing of paints for lead contaminants, and increasing shipping costs. So, to sum it all up, we heartily recommend placing your pre-orders for their newer aircraft as soon as possible before the manufacturer enforced pricing policies take effect on August 1st....[posted 5/15/2008]

Also up for consideration is their first ever Sd. Kfz. 251/10 Ausf. D halftrack with 3.7cm gun, finished in a stark winter white camo pattern (DRA60301).

Easy Model's Wolfpack Takes Up an Attack Position
It appears as though Easy Model is planning an attack on our diecast convoy system this spring. I'm not at liberty to discuss who we've tapped for the initial round of chit-chat, but rest assured these are important players in the industry who may be willing to discuss both their present and future plans, despite today's weakening economic climate. Gaso.Line: Fill'er Up, Mister?
Its been awhile since we last received a shipment from our french friends, Gaso.Line, and with good reason. The present US dollar/Euro imbalance has created a situation where many of their items now cost us appreciably more than what they previously did, in some instances by 50%. Add to that the fact that we have to import this range from abroad plus factor in any applicable customs duties means we either refrain from bringing in their line for the forseeable future or continually hike their retail prices to cover our costs.

Having said that, we are planning to bring in one shipment of Gaso.Line products later this summer. This shipment will hopefully include many of the new items that have been advertised for several months along with some previously released items. We are NOT planning to bring in excess product for general sale. This means that if we do not have a firm order in-house from our Gaso.Line enthusiasts, then you can assume that you will not be able to obtain these pieces after the shipment arrives.

We know this sounds a bit harsh but we have to constantly look at the economic realities behind each line we stock and the likelihood that some pieces could sit in inventory for extended periods of time. No retailer wants to tie up money when it could be put to better use in other facets of their business. So, if you're looking to pick up some of their highly coveted pieces, now would be the time to check with us to see if you can indeed order them....[posted 4/22/2008]

Hobby Master Keeps Up the Pressure On the Ground, and in the Air
With other manufacturers seemingly stalled for the moment, Hobby Master seized the day yet again by launching another preemptive attack on the diecast market. By land, the Company plans on producing a 1:72 scale M24 Chaffee light tank, a popular caison among collectors, wargamers and model makers alike. Also up for consideration is a US M10 tank destroyer, this time in the service of the French Army. Aloft, look forward to seeing a 1:48 scale, pre-war F3F fighter, the last American biplane delivered to the United States Navy. Several additional birds were also unveiled, including repaints of the F-100D, F-4 Phantom (Blue Angels), Messerschmitt Bf 110G, and Canadian CF-104 Starfighter. A third 1:32 scale Dauntless was also shown for the first time, returning to the sky blue paint scheme associated with most WWII era naval aircraft. We hope to have all the new products posted by April 20th....[posted 4/19/2008]

The first plane is a US-built Martin Maryland light bomber, which saw service early in the war with the French Air Force. The second 1:144 scale bomber replicates an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley medium bomber, which again saw military service during the early portion of the campaign in Europe. Daddy, Can I ride the Carousel?

We're finally coming to the close of our first graphical upgrade cycle, so we thought it made sense to give you a look at some of the upcoming projects being designed to enhance your experience. By now, you've no doubt noticed that we've implemented polling software, which will hopefully provide some insight as to what you and your fellow collectors are seeking in diecast collectibles. The next major revision will incorporate both "carousel" and "ferris wheel" based information wheels sprinkled liberally throughout our web site.

One such ferris wheel can be found on our Survey page, while a sample carousel has been shoehorned into the newest Minichamps King Tiger tank product listing about halfway down the page (MIN350013001). Both require the Flash 9.0 player, which can be obtained free-of-charge from the Adobe web site (www.Adobe.com).

Although both types of wheels are currently designed to peddle reference material from Amazon.com, our hope is that a similar system can be retrofitted to handle interactive maps, weapons, technical specifications, etc. which will hopefully breathe new life into our virtual retail world. Wish us luck.....[posted 4/13/2008]

Armour Collection Takes Canada By Storm
Admittedly, there seems to be a dearth of limited edition Armour Collection warbirds taking flight these days, due to any number of reasons from higher than normal production costs to delayed shipping. That said, we just learned that three all-new Candaian CF-18 Hornets are due to touch down in April, each with its own unique paint scheme.

The first is a commemorative aircraft known as "Hornets 20" (B11E631), which combines a black and multi-faceted orange paint scheme covering much of the aircraft, and commemorates the Hornet's 20th year of service with the RCAF. Also, in the mix is a Tiger Meet aircraft used in 2003 (B11E632), and features a stunning tiger-striped pattern adorning the bird from tip to toe. Last up, is a gorgeous Maple-leaf inspired Hornet (B11E633), which celebrates the 60th Anniversary of 425 Squadron. We'll pass along further information as soon as we learn it.

In the air, the first gaggle of 1:144 scale WWII era bombers are expected in April, with a second wave of aircraft likely landing two months behind them. Armour Dates their PBYs
When Armour Collection announced their intent to make a 1:48 scale PBY Catalina, it seemed like the diecast world drew its collective breath. Long a favorite among aviation enthusiasts, the PBY Catalina became one of the most iconic planes of World War II, particularly in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, where it was used with great success as a scout plane, search and rescue aircraft, and even a night time bomber.

That said, the manufacturer has acknowledged that they are expecting the first wave of floatplanes on April 10th, making them ideal candidates for graduation gifts and Father's Day offerings. Word has it that only 1,000 pieces will be produced and the aircraft will come bundled with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Due out in July, the new bird will feature a variable geometry wing, so the plane can be displayed in-flight or in a takeoff position. Based upon sales velocity of the first Jolly Rogers warbirds, this will certainly become another coveted addition to any aviation enthusiast's collection.

Its important to point out that the first Jolly Rogers F-14s have sold in excess of $200 in after market venues and that this new version isn't simply a rehash. The new 'Cat will sport a different identification number and we hear that they've improved its fidelity, making it even more detailed than its predecessors.
