Hobby Master Boasts, "Sweet Days Ahead"
Rumors have been running rampant the past few days concerning Hobby Master's proposed new toolings for 2011. According to one source, the following new products are being developed for the new year: 1:72 scale A-26 Invader light attack aircraft, 1:48 scale Hawker Fury biplane fighter, 1:72 scale Bedford QL series of trucks and a US M7 Priest self-propelled gun. Reports are also surfacing that they may dabble in the World War I era military vehicle market, with the British-built Mark IV Male and Female caisons serving as their first choice.

In their SkyMax Model's sister series of diecast military aircraft, plans are moving forward for a Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bomber. The A-26 is a particularly important announcement since it signals their intent to produce twin-engine medium bombers, something collectors have been clammoring for over the past couple of years. With so many subjects to choose from and lots of liveries to pick from, it looks like Hobby Master is quickly becoming the "go to" choice for new product types on both the ground and in the air. We'll post product information as soon as its passed along by the distributor.......[posted 8/17/2010]

Tamiya Launches a New Offensive
Admittedly, things have been rather quiet at Tamiya, particularly in regard to their immensely popular Tamiya Masterworks line. That said, several new pieces are apparently in the works, according to their July new product announcement page. On the ground, collectors can look forward to a 1:48 scale model of a German Kettenkrad which is bundled with a Goliath remote controlled anti-vehicle mine. Also expected is a British Bren Carrier, perhaps one of the most iconic vehicles of World War II. In the air, reports are surfacing that Tamiya will be offering a "semi-finished" replica of a Japanese Betty bomber in 1:48 scale. Presently, the term "semi-finished" is open to interpretation as is the materials used in its construction. Hobby Master Recalls the Glory Days of the Tuskegee Airmen
It's no secret that the USAAF's black aviators during WWII, collectively known as The Tuskegee Airmen, were some of the most capable fliers of the war, racking up an astounding kill ratio while protecting allied bombers en route to their objectives over Nazi-occupied Europe. To commemorate their achievements, Hobby Master has announced their intent to model one of the most famous "Red Tailed" aircraft, that belonging to Lt. Robert Williams (HA7703). Nicknamed "Duchess Arlene", Williams, a member of the 100th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group, shot down one of the Luftwaffe's Me 262 jet fighters on March 24th, 1944, and a pair of Fw 190s on March 31st. The Motor Pool: Computer Upgrade Cycle
Typically, the week following July 4th is a slow time of year for us, so we chose it to upgrade our computer hardware. Moving from Windows XP to Windows 7, was, on paper, a smart move for us since it meant faster hardware and less downtime. Little did we know that our older printers would not work with the new operating system so we had to supplant our purchases with new printers. These are due in sometime next week, so we've had to ship out orders without invoices this week to avoid having them pile up. Customers can still obtain a physical copy of their invoice by logging on to their account then printing out the missing invoice. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope everyone understands our sticky dillemma during this upgrade cycle......[posted 7/8/2010]

Panzerstahl Picks the Puma As Its Next Pet Project
Okay, so we're suckers for alliterative text. Be that as it may, German-based Panzerstahl has announced that they will soon be releasing a 1:72 scale replica of the German Sd. Painted in a dazzling summer camouflage scheme and wearing the markings of 2.Panzer Division then serving in Normandy during 1944, the all-new model is expected to become available sometime this August.

In related news, it now appears as if the manufacturer will be offering an entire family of German 8-wheeled armored cars. Listings were created for both the Sd. Kfz. 234/1 and Sd. Kfz. 234/3 armored cars, although images for both items have yet to be shown. We anticipate the Sd. Part of the so-called Century Series of US aircraft, the Delta Dagger was the first operational supersonic interceptor and delta-wing fighter of the USAF (HA3101). Other new aircraft and vehicle builds were shown for the first time, including a second take on the F-22 Raptor, a RAAF F-111C Aardvark, new revs of the F-105 Thunderchief and F-4E Phantom II and an Italian Harrier jump jet. On the ground, armor enthusiasts can look forward to repaints of the Marder anti-tank gun, British Quad gun tractor and US Willys jeep with its top up. The Motor Pool: Father's Day Wish List
Every so often, we like to share our own hopes and desires for new diecast replicas with the general audience and modelmakers alike, perhaps in a selfish attempt to add these pieces in miniature to our own private war musueum. Seeing as how it's Father's Day, and we've got a few hours to kills before the family barbeque kicks off, I thought now would be a good time to get the ball rolling. In the aviation space, we're hoping that the following items see the light of day: TBD Devastator, P-61 Black Widow, B-47 Stratojet, and virtually any WWI-era bomber. Moreover, we believe there's intense interest in WWII-era Japanese, Italian and Russian bombers, as well as several fighters, reconnaissance planes and other subjects that have yet to be built. On the ground, there's still dozens upon dozens of war machines that have yet to be explored in any scale, notably artillery, logistical types and soft-skinned vehicles. Certainly, a number of 1:32 scale projects should be green lighted as soon as possible, including many heavy Russian WWII and Cold War era tanks (ISU-152, IS-1, IS-2, T-55, T-62), a littany of Japanese WWII-era tanks (Chi-Ha, Ka-Mi) and a greater representation of USMC weaponry, particularly amphibious assault vehicles and landing ships (LST). We'll have more to say on these subjects in the weeks ahead, but as the economy starts to pick up again, now is an ideal time for the manufacturers to start greasing the wheels of progress before other modelmakers steal the show.....[posted 6/20/2010]

The first offering in the series is a JCB HMEE Backhoe, painted in a striking desert sand camouflage pattern and likely employed in the reconstruction efforts occurring in both Iraq and Afghanistan. We hope to have this 1:50 scale replica shortly and have opened the pre-order window so you can place your orders ahead of their receipt...[posted 6/19/2010]

Unimax Exclaims, "Achtung Panzer!"
Details have slowly been surfacing concerning Unimax' top-secret Extreme Metal Panzer IV (UNI85060). Tentatively slated for an April 2011 release, their first ever 1:16 scale rendition of the Panzerkampfwagen IV is based upon an H variant, which will come complete with removable schurzen side armor skirts, a turret girdle, figures and other accessories. Pricing has yet to be determined so we haven't set a retail price for it as yet, however, we are placing a strong buy recommendation on it, given its pedigree in the Extreme Metal lineage, its scheme, features and dearth of over-sized machines of war in recent months. We anticipate strong demand for this item and will make a general announcement once this item has been cleared for pre-order acceptance. Stay tuned...[posted 6/15/2010]

After a hiatus of sorts, the company announced their intent to put six repainted planes in the diecast pattern, all of which are due out some time this summer. Perhaps the most intriguing variant will be an Iranian F-14A, which purportedly was involved in a fierce furball over the Iran-Iraq warfront in 1987. Other newbies include an SR-71A reconnaissance aircraft, an A-6 Intruder, and three takes on the A-7 Corsair II. G version with schurzen side armor skirts and a turret girdle, this all-new release will come in several paint schemes and be made available in both a zimmerit and non-zimmerit version. According to the promotional literature, each replica comes complete with a thrown track option, a casualty figure, rear stowage ( helmet and crates ), two crew figures, a destroyed idle wheel, cupola-mounted machine gun, open and closing hatches and removable shurzen side plates. Booster figure packs will be offered as well, which will include two riders and two figures disembarking from the vehicle. We are currently awaiting full pricing and shipping information, but for now thought you might like to see what they have in the works....[posted 5/18/2010]

Gemini Aces Feels the Need for Speed
Admittedly, pickings have been pretty slim in the F-15 space, with fewer and fewer selections to choose from. Thankfully, Gemini Aces is about to release its first 'Eagle', based upon a bird flown by the 5th Fighter Interceptor Squadron "Spittin Kittens", then deployed to Minot AFB, ND, in 1985 (GEMGAUSA7001). Also up for your consideration is a Dutch F-16C known as "The Orange Lion", which was flown by the National Demo Team Ralph and deployed to Volkel AB, Netherlands, during 2009 (GANAF5002). Both machines are slated to touch down some time in May.....[posted 5/12/2010]

Minichamps' Lets Its Hondas Do the Talking
If past history serves as any indication, Minichamps will finally be releasing a bunch of highly anticipated Honda motorcycles over the next few weeks. Generally, the manufacturer tends to post photos, including any close-ups and detail shots, 30-60 days before they make a bike available to their dealer network. So, if the trend continues, we can look forward to several bikes appearing in the next few weeks, including a red 1975 Gold Wing, a tri-colored 1982 CB1100R, and a ruby red 1968 CB 750 Four KO. Other bikes look to be figured in the mix, among them a 1993 Kevin Schwantz Suzuki, and, of course, the long delayed Triumph Speed-Twin. Better get your orders in early because we may not have most of these bikes available for general sale once they do arrive......[posted 5/12/2010]

Hobby Master Sharpens the Tip of its Spear
Earlier today, Hobby Master announced their August 2010 release schedule, which includes a number of repaints and a brand new vehicle: a German Sd. Kfz. 234/3 armored car (HG4302). Also on the docket are all-new schemes for their wildly successful F-105 Thunderchief, AH-1 Skyraider and F-4 Phantom fighter-bomber. Other weapons are in the pattern too, including an all-new RAF Harrier jump jet and a two-tone M10 tank destroyer that was attached to the US 1st Armored Division.....[posted 5/10/2010]

The Motor Pool: Pardon Out Dust
We're happy to report that we've hit milestone two concerning our web site revitalization program. This includes hand adjusting each product record to reflect their My Reward point value, reworking our search engine optimization code, the fleshing out of our upper navigation sections (Aircraft Hangar, Combat Command Center, etc.) and build out of certain key sections. We hope to have everything completed sometime this month. In the meantime, feel free to peruse out site, investigate some of the new areas, and place orders for anything you might see and like.....[posted 5/6/2010]

Minichamps' Speed-Twin: Light at the End of the Tunnel
Approximately three years after it was first announced, Minichamps has confirmed that their highly anticipated Triumph Speed-Twin motorcycle is on the water and expected around early June. We'll be reviewing our pre-order list shortly and strongly recommend anyone that has pre-ordered the bike to contact us to confirm that we have their current billing information on file. Manufacturer Round-Up Week Ending April 23rd, 2010
News is breaking on a number of fronts, so we thought it made sense to create one news bite that covers everything. For starters, the pre-order window is now open for the Red Falcon Diecast 1:72 scale MiG 23ML Flogger fighter. Priced at $59.99, with a pre-order price of just $53.99, and just 2,000 pieces offered, this one looks like a no-brainer. Gaso.Line has confirmed that they are putting the finishing touches on the Buffalo mine-clearing vehicle, so we should be receiving our long-delayed shipment in early May, barring any unforseen problems with volcanic activity in Iceland. We've completed shipments of the Minichamps JFK X-100 limousine, and have a handful of pieces left in stock. The manufacturer has acknowledged that they are already sold out of these cars so it could be quite some time before they revisit this subject. Corgi will be shipping several new aircraft introductions, including their first ever Westland Lynx helicopter. Look for these to arrive shortly. Lastly, our April Hobby Master shipment is expected in a few days, which includes their F/A-22 Raptor and second issue AH-1 Skyraider.

On the home front, we're about halfway through our product portfolio, updating each product record to reflect their My Rewards points. This is a time-consuming process, so we appreciate everyone's patience in this matter. You should start to see these points automatically accrue in your account seven days following an item's shipment. Simultaneously, we've embarked upon our web site revitalization program, which is segmenting each of the four upper navigational regions to provide better access. The first section being revamped is the Combat Command Center, with the "World War II: War on the Western Front" Theatre of Operations section now completed. Check it out when you have the chance.

In other news, it appears as if the WarMaster line is stillborn, so we will not be accepting any further pre-orders for the range. The reason for its demise is too muddled for us to explain, but suffice it to say it was great on paper, and we'll leave it at that. Meanwhile there's been a delay in the receipt of the Panzerstahl range. Our original intent was to import the pieces from Germany ourselves but since they've recently secured a reliable distributor here in North America, we'd prefer to work through them to obtain the merchandise. We apologize for the delay and hope everyone understands that sometimes things occur that are beyond our control....[posted 4/23/2010]

Dragon Takes a Giant Leap for Mankind
With the drawdown of the US Space Shuttle Program, and unclear role NASA will take during the follow-on period, renewed interest in our nation's space exploration efforts seems to be gathering momentum. Taking a page out of history, Dragon has announced plans to come out with three impressive replicas over the course of the next few weeks, all designed with the manned space flight program in mind. The first is a 1:400 scale replica of the Space Shuttle Enterprise, which sits atop a Boeing 747 jumbo jet that was used to ferry the vehicle from Edwards AFB to its home in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Also expected are two renditions of the huge Saturn V rocket, which was used to shoot the Apollo astronauts and their attendant equipment into space on their voyage to the moon. One replica pays tribute to the Apollo XI space shot, the first craft to carry men to the moon, while the second pays homage to Apollo XIII, the space shot that was forced to return to earth prematurely when they encountered a near-fatal accident on their trip to the moon.

You can find all of these fine tributes to our nation's fifty year-old space program in our brand new Manned Space Flight Section.....[posted 4/17/2010]

Minichamps Pays Homage to President Kennedy
Minichamps has confirmed that their highly anticipated JFK X-100 Lincoln limousine is en route to us and expected this week. First released almost a decade ago, the re-introduction of this timeless classic has been eagerly awaited by both the political and diecast collecting communities, fueled in part by the astronomical prices the first release is commanding on Ebay. A typical search on the auction site brings up a handful of listings with asking prices running north of $400 or more. Our product will be available for only $99.99, and, like the original offering, comes complete with the entire Kennedy entourage as they sat in the X-100 on that fateful morning of November 22nd, 1963, driving through the streets of Dallas, Texas......[posted 4/13/2010]

Dragon Saddles Up
Since its inception, Dragon has claimed that their budget-minded Dragon Armor Value Plus range would be revisiting many of the subjects that made their award-winning line of Dragon Armor vehicles so popular. Modeled after a bird which flew with the Alabama Air National Guard (HA1951), we have high hopes for this important asset. Designed to storm Pacific atolls and offer its occupants a modicum of protection during the amphibious phase of combat operations, the amtank has become one of those iconic weapons of World War II that personified the US counterstike in the Pacific during the latter stages of the War. New Line: Red Falcon Diecast
As the economy starts to rebound, its refreshing to see so many new players entering the diecast military space. Take Red Falcon Diecast as the latest example. While rumors have circulated for some time regarding their existance, this small but feisty upstart finally revealed their business plan and rather focused approach to entering the crowded aviation market. According to sources, Red Falcon Diecast intends to model a number of third and fourth generation Soviet-built jet aircraft, a subject that has largely been overlooked by some of the more mainstream modelmakers. Their first effort, a 1:72 scale MiG 23ML, will be clad in Russian markings and is scheduled to become available later this spring. Other iconic Soviet birds are on the drawing board, notably a MiG 25 Foxbat interceptor, an aircraft that threw the West into a tailspin when it was first introduced. It's not clear if they plan to offer other types of Cold War era aircraft types, particularly the Bear, Bison and Badger bombers, or if they plan to branch out into rotary wing aircraft. We'll post product information for the MiG 23 shortly as soon as their distributor finalizes the item's price and SKU...[posted 4/1/2010]

Long since sold out and occassionally available on sites such as ebay, the He 162 regularly commands prices far in excess of their original asking price. That said, Easy Model has finally drawn back the curtains on their long promised 1:72 scale He 162 (EM36345 and EM36347), painted in the traditional dark green camouflage scheme most collectors and historians associate with this nimble jet fighter. Hobby Master Steps Up Where Franklin Mint Left Off
Some time ago, we conducted an interview with William Liu, the Managing Director at Hobby Master. As many of you may know, 2010 also marks the debut of the Moto2 class, with many famours riders and bike manufacturers taking their position on the tracks. There's a good chance that Minichamps may be offering diecast replicas for this new class, perhaps now or in the not-too-distant future. Therefore, we'll be posting the standings and racing results on the same page as the MotoGP stats and look forward to following the new class with eager anticipation.....[posted 1/17/2010]

The Allied Tide Begins to Surge at The Collectors Showcase
As promised several months back, The Collectors Showcase has begun work on a cacophany of Allied armor to confront all of the Axis vehicles they've previously released. Expected sometime in February, the first release in The Allied Tide series will be a US 75 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M8 Tank, complete with three crewmen and a bonus "thrown" track so you can display it in a wrecked state, if you so choose. The howitzer will come in two versions - a standard olive drab variant and a whitewashed winter camouflage scheme. The manufacturer has also indicated new product announcements can be expected every two months, meaning more new caisons arent far behind.....[posted 1/9/2010]

Tank Museum Climbs Into the Hurt Locker
Word from UK-based Tank Museum is that they are fast putting the finishing touches on a German-issued Sturmgeschutz Ausf. G assault gun with Schurzen side skirts. Expected sometime in February, the Stug represents their first new introduction in a very long time and could signal the release of additional vehicles in the sorely overlooked 1:50 scale diecast military market. Make sure to submit your pre-orders early since these vehicles have to be imported from across the pond and could be limited to an abbreviated production run.....[posted 1/7/2010]

Corgi Touts Their Mid-Year Lineup
In an effort to stay one step ahead of the competition, UK-based Corgi revealed details concerning their mid-year military aircraft lineup. Loads of repaints are in the offing, along with several new toolings, including their first ever 1:72 scale rendition of the Westland Whirlwind medium lift helicopter. The new mix will also include a 1:32 scale model of an early war Supermarine Spitfire and a 1:72 scale take on the Boulton Paul Defiant night fighter. We fully expect some additional US-skewed aircraft to join the fray, but we thought you might want to get a gander at those aircraft we do know about. Looks Like its Bikes-a-Plenty Courtesy of Minichamps
According to Minichamps recently updated website, January is stacking up to become one of their most prolific months in the world of two-wheeled riding. To begin with, the eagerly awaited 1939 Triumph Speed-Twin is on the docket, not to mention their 1998 Yamaha SR 500. Also undergoing final inspection is world champion Anton Mang's 1981 Kawasaki KR350, finished in day-glow green and bearig his distintive insignia. January Looks Especially Promising for Corgi
Its been awhile since we've received any newly tooled aircraft from the house of Corgi , so January is shaping up to become an important month for this stalwart model maker. For openers, we've just taken delivery on their eagerly awaited BAC TSR-2 strike aircraft, a product of the Cold War that was designed to take on the best the Soviet Air Force could throw at us. On the repaint stage, we're ogling an all-new Hawker T7 Hunter fighter along with a sharp-looking SH-3 Sea King clad in a Royal Navy blue Search and Rescue operational scheme.

Further down the road, Corgi has confirmed the imminent release of their German Dornier Do-17 light bomber, a WWII-era twin-engine level bomber which was designed, at least in theory, to outrun any defending single-engine fighters set upon them by the enemy. Other aircraft are slated for a January/February release, including a pair of Westand Lynx attack helicopters, Hermann Goring's WWI vintage D VII fighter, and a Luftwaffe Dornier Do-215 schnellbomber.....[posted 1/1/2010]

Just when you thought they were all gone comes news that Wittmann's mount is still available. We've unearthed a handful of the Unimax 1:16 scale Tiger I heavy tank with figures from a nearby distributor and now have them in stock and ready for shipment for holiday delivery. Needless to say, these hard-to-find favorites have escalated in value and have gone for premium prices on ebay and other venues. Unimax Ups the Price of Admission for their R/C Products
Effective December 20th, Unimax, the makers of the wildly popular Forces of Valor Radio Controlled Vehicle Series, intends to pass along a price increase to their dealer network for their R/C tanks. In turn, we will have to raise the retail price for each of their vehicles, along with the two-pack bundles we offer. While the Tiger I and Sherman tanks are currently on back order, we will hold their retail prices at their current levels until December 20th, meaning you can save some dough when they finally do return to stock in late February. Likewise, their recently released King Tiger and MLRS will be affected by the price increase, so if you're interested in any of their vehicles, now would be a good time to lock in their present prices....[posted 12/12/2009]

The Franklin Mint Winds Down the Armour Collection Range
Its a classic case of good news and bad news. With the imminent release of their long awaited F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter comes word that The Franklin Mint is winding down their Armour Collection range of 1:48 scale diecast military aircraft. According to sources, only special dealer versions will be considered going forward with the balance of their existing inventory being sold off on a first come first served basis. The Franklin Mint cites rising manufacturing costs as the principal reason for their decision, although the downturn in the global economic landscape is no doubt playing an equally important role for the supplier.

News Update: Due to the low inventory position at The Franklin Mint, we are no longer accepting any orders for the Armour Collection line of aircraft or the 1:24 scale range of military vehicles. Sorry to disappoint, but we do not want to accept orders we cannot fill....[posted 11/30/2009]

Dragon Takes The Wraps Off of its Latest Panzer

With this in mind, Dragon today showed off their very first Panzer IV Ausf. F2 medium tank (DRA60088), which sports a powerful long barrel 75mm gun, the scourge of many an Allied tanker. The Holidays are Upon Us: Order Early
Amazing as it might seem, we're already in holiday mode, thanks to the arrival of several long delayed items, a strong in-stock position, an unbeatable 15% off sale, and free UPS ground shipping to destinations within the Continental US for orders of $100 or more. So what's the problem with a winning formula like that? Plenty. We've noticed that several of our suppliers are unable to handle re-orders we've tried to place with them for a number of items. Many manufacturers and distributors cut their own orders when they were unsure about the present state of the economy. Moreover, they've pushed back the release date for several items we thought would be available for the holiday season well into the New Year. In a nutshell, that means we're rapidly running out of certain merchandise, even at this early stage in the shopping season. Designed as a straight wing jet fighter and employed during the early portion of the Korean War, The Thunderjet never truly lived up to its name, thanks in large part to the introduction of the faster and more nimble Russian-built MiG 15. Still, it proved its usefulness in other ways, bowing out to the North American F-86 Sabre jet as the principal means of dealing with the pesky MiG.

Now SkyMax Models plan to model the F-84 Thunderjet (SM6001) in exacting detail, claiming the warbird will be out before Christmas. There's a good chance they'll also be modeling the Thunderjet's successor, the F-84 Thunderstreak, which utilized more aerodynamic swept wings in place of the straight wing configuration. We expect the Thunderjet to do exceptionally well at retail, so make sure to submit your pre-orders early to be guaranteed one of these subsonic splendors...[posted 8/10/2009]

The Motor Pool: Revision 4.0
We're a firm believer in trying to keep things fresh and interesting on our web site, much like a brick-and-mortar store periodically rotates their inventory and windowfront display to attract new customers. Having said that, we're now on the doorstep of version 4.0, which has been codenamed Project Thunder. Without giving too much away, our next revision will add a number of new back end features to our software solution that will enable us to process orders faster and give us added dexterity in the online retailing space. Likewise, we'll be rolling out some new front end ideas, that we believe will breathe new life into our product portfolio. We'll expound upon these ideas in the coming weeks...[posted 8/9/2009]

Minichamps Posts Pix of their 2009 Classics
Anyone that follows Minichamps knows that it can take some time before an announced product actually makes it to market. Perhaps the best indicator that an item is soon-to-be-released is the posting of the replica's image to the manufacturer's web site, a sign that the item has at least made it past the engineering hand sample phase and is fast on its way to actual packaging and production.

In the case of their classic motorcycles, several new images were recently uploaded to the manufacturer's web site, which are now available for viewing on our own site. Among the new screenshots you can find the MV Agusta AGO and Senna bikes, Yamaha V-MAX and SR500 two-wheelers and Kawasaki 500 H1 Mach3 ride. Most of these bikes are slated for an October/November ship, so we urge you to get in your pre-order for these bikes if you hope to nab one of these favorites during the frenzied holiday timeframe.....[posted 8/3/2009]

Hobby Master Straps on the Skyraider
Call it the Spad, Sandy or Able Dog, the Douglas A-1 Skyraider has been one of the most heavily requested models sought after by aviation buffs. Looking to keep their constituency happy and beef up their stable of combat aircraft, Hobby Master today announced their intent to replicate the Skyraider in 1:72 scale. The first offering is based upon an H model that was dubbed "Mig Killer", which flew with VA-176, then embarked upon the USS Intrepid (CVS-11) during October 1966 (HA2901). Piloted by Lt. (JG) William "Tom" Patton, Patton downed a MiG-17 jet fighter during a RESCAP mission over North Vietnam on October 9th, 1966. No easy feat considering he was flying a prop-driven bird versus a "fast-moving" jet fighter.

Expect to take hold of this fascinating warbird sometime in the first quarter of 2010.....[posted 7/29/2009]

Unimax' Shifting Winds of War
In today's ever-challenging economic landscape, several longstanding toy manufacturers have had to reassess their business model to keep up with the fragile retail and e-tail worlds. In the case of Unimax, the makers of the wildly popular Forces of Valor and Bravo Team range of military miniatures, 2009 looks to be a year of significant change, one which they believe will bring about a redefined focus and stronger financial outlook going forward.

According to well placed sources within the company, Unimax has ceased manufacturing of their 1:32 scale, action grade, diecast Forces of Valor products -- the kind commonly found in such mass merchants as Target and Toys R Us -- in favor of the all-plastic 1:18 scale Bravo Team (Target Exclusive) and Assault Forces (other mass merchant retailers) military-themed brands. Looking ahead, the Company will still produce the 1:32 scale diecast enthusiast grade of Forces of Valor products for their ever growing online e-tailer and specialist retailer network. The Company cites demographic issues as a key concern for both the manufacturer and its retailing network, with kids tending to purchase the bulk of the modern era products and the older hobbyists and military enthusiasts opting for the World War II series. Having said that, the manufacturer will no longer be offering any World War II-based Bravo Team vehicles or figures to its mass merchant retail segment and instead offer them solely to the e-tailers and hobby shops. Only the modern era vehicles will be found at the mass merchants, an evolutionary shift in their selling strategy that was brought about by skewing marketing trends that was becoming acute at the retail level.

Frankly, we welcome the change in focus at Unimax, since it should cut down on the amount of overlap and confusion caused by offering both an action and enthusiast grade of similar products. Likewise, this shift will enable retailers such as ourselves to now carry their larger 1:18 scale WWII-themed products without having to compete with deep discount chains who may or may not have the same product at any given time.....[posted 7/28/2009]

Armour Collection to Play it Forward in 2009?
There's a good chance you may see several new Armour Collection toolings in the latter half of 2009. Looking to beef up their current range of 1:48 scale combat aircraft and undoubtedly fan the fires for their holiday sales, sources indicate that several new aircraft may be made available during the fourth quarter of 2009 instead of waiting until the hands of time strikes 2010. No word concerning which new subjects will make the cut although we have learned that The Franklin Mint will be paring its warbird lineup, perhaps offering no more than three versions of each airplane. If this is true, several popular warbirds will likely hit the cutting room floor all in an effort to make the line more manageable for both the manufacturer and its dealer network.....[posted 7/16/2009]

Once More Solido?
Tread heads, sit up and take notice. There's a strong possibility that you'll once again be able to purchase Solido military vehicles in the North American market in the not-too-distant future. After having pulled out of the US and Canadian scene several years ago, its been a bear trying to determine if the Solido range of 1:43/1:50 scale military hardware will ever make it to our shores again. Apparently, the manufacturer is currently looking for a distributing partner and, if a deal can be inked shortly, you may be able to lay your mitts on their latest hardware by year's end. The usual list of suspects will most likely be made available first, including a Panther, Sherman and Tiger tank (according to the manufacturer's web site), not to mention a bevy of post-war French weaponry, but there's a good chance that new tooling may come out in 2010, now that their manufacturing facilities have been relocated to the Far East where its cheaper to produce the stuff. Through rare archival footage, computer generated imagery, historical re-enactments, and interviews with World War II historians and veterans, this program -- the first in a new series created by Classic Planes and Historic Aviation -- examines the development and and operational history of German dive-bombers, from the early tests of the Junkers K 47 in the late 1920s through the end of World War II. As a bonus, you'll also get eight documentary shorts on legendary aircraft such as the R6V Constitution, the Curtiss Helldiver, and the Princess flying boat.

Based on the Stephen Ambrose retelling of the exploits of Easy Company, 508th Airborne Regiment, 101st Airborne ("Screaming Eagles"), the gritty multi-installment World War II series has garnered many awards over the years and can still be found among the top DVD purchases. Happily, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have collaborated once again ("Saving Private Ryan") to produce "The Pacific", a similarly engineered mini series which focuses on the exploits of a US Marine detachment in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during the cataclysmic Second World War. Rumored to cost in excess of $200m, the series has been talked about for some time, and will no doubt help to spark a resurgence in World War II collectibles. Based on a mount flown by Oberstleutnant Walter Dahl who was assigned to Jagdgeschwader 300, their inaugural Focke Wulf bears the infamous 'Wild Sau' ('Wild Boar') insignia, indicating it was designed for bomber interception and, if necessary, ramming operations against incoming heavy bombers to break up their formations. Look for the first bird to cut a swath of destruction sometime in July....[posted 4/15/2009]

Dragon: Have Gun Will Travel
We've always wondered why none of the modelmakers we collaborate with were interested in producing a line of collectible firearm replicas. Seeing an opportunity in the marketplace and grabbing it by the horns, Dragon decided to step up and try their hand at offering a range of "small arms" that will purportedly cut across multiple eras and weapons types. Their first such release will be a 1:3 scale reproduction of the German Glock G17, a semi-automatic pistol that is used by many law enforcement agencies worldwide. Other weapons in the pipeline include a US-made M-14 semi-automatic rifle, which was used quite effectively during the Vietnam Conflict prior to its replacement by the M-16. Look for the Glock to take aim at the North American market sometime in May....[posted 4/10/2009]

Century Wings Hangs More Iron Bombs on Its A-7 Corsair
Its no secret that legions of Century Wings supporters would like to see the manufacturer offer some USAF replicas to sit alongside their USN counterparts. Always one to listen to their fans, the manufacturer has indicated that they plan to offer their first ever A-7D Corsair II attack aircraft, one attached to a USAF squadron then deployed to Thailand during the latter stages of the Vietnam Conflict. Painted in a darkened southeast Asian camouflage scheme and adorned in USAF markings, their newest Corsair has finally been hot-ironed with a SKU number and price, not to mention a ship date...[posted 4/9/2009]

Heinrich Bauer Puts the 'B' in Bugatti
Last year, no one in the diecast community knew anything about newcomer Heinrich Bauer. One year later, everyone is still talking about their inaugural launch, a 1:18 scale 1930 Bugatti that, quite literally, blew the doors off the competition in the high end replica market. Still preferring to remain a mysterious entity, their US distributor announced today that two more colorful Bugatti Type 41 Royales are on the drawing board, one bearing red insert side panels and the other cream. Both vehicles are expected some time in July, and carry a very attractive pre-order price of $539.99, a $60 savings off their regular price of $599.99. A separate acrylic cover is now available for the cars, which snugly sits atop the vehicle's handsome wooden base....[posted 4/2/2009]

Minichamps Signs Up with the Bundeswehr's Training Program
While the robust Leopard tank forms the backbone of the modern Bundeswehr, it seems to have special significance for German modelmaker Minichamps. Earlier today, the manufacturer announced its intent to produce yet another variant of the Leopard 2A4 later this year, this one based upon a vehicle attached to the panzer training unit 3./ Panzerlehrbataillon 334 "CELLE", which was quartered at Munster, Germany in 1993. We hope to have an image of the new Leopard shortly and expect to take delivery of this new 1:35 scale vehicle towards the end of the year...[posted 3/30/2009]

New Line: JLG
You could say that the latest modelmaker to join our product portfolio is reaching for the sky, judging by their latest diecast effort. Long a player in the real world construction sector, JLG has begun to dabble in the smaller scale regime, producing a hefty 1:32 scale replica of a US Army telehandler. What's a telehandler? Short for telescopic handler, a telehandler is a machine widely used in agriculture and industry. It is similar in appearance and function to a forklift, with the increased versatility of a single telescopic boom that can extend forwards and upwards from the vehicle. On the end of the boom the operator can attach one of several attachments, such as a bucket, pallet forks, muck grab, or lift table. So, while it isnt intended to ferry troops into battle or take on T-72s with abandon, it does have its place on the miltary roster...[posted 3/28/2009]

New Line: TWH Collectibles
Museum quality replicas aren't for the feint of heart, since they oftentimes come with a hefty price tag to match their glorious detail. In the case of TWH Collectibles, we fully realize that not everyone has the ability to afford these exquisite curiosities, however, it cant hurt to dream, especially if you're a diehard collector where price is no object. Handcrafted by talented artisans and built from the ground up with the high end aficionado in mind, TWH Collectibles has steadily carved out a respectable niche in the marketplace by catering to the truly discriminating collector of construction vehicles. Now looking to build a collector base in the military realm, this manufacturer is now offering two different 1:50 scale versions of the US Army's Oshkosh HEMTT M985 A2 cargo truck, complete with a working crane and detailed parts. Also up for consideration and due out later this year are two renditions of the US Army Oshkosh HET M1070 A1 with M1000 trailer, which are used to convey the HEMTT when not being fully utilized by the military. When nestled one atop the other, this paring is truly jaw-dropping, conjuring up images of meandering supply trains following behind the armored fist...[posted 3/27/2009]

Hobby Master Subscribes to Supply Side Economics
While there are dozens upon dozens of armored fighting vehicle replicas crafted in 1:72 scale, there is, nevertheless, a dearth of soft-skinned vehicles available to collectors. Looking to correct this oversight and bring balance to the universe, Hobby Master plans to offer two support vehicles later this spring, thus elongating their logistical tail. The first two vehicles are based upon the German-built Opel Blitz, one representing a 3-ton troop transport (HG3901) and the second modelling a Fuel Servicing vehicle (HG3902). Both are painted in a dark yellow scheme, indicating they served with a Luftwaffe unit during the opening phases of World War II...[posted 3/12/2009]

Hobby Master Initiates Its Rolling Thunder Campaign
For months, speculation has been running rampant concerning Hobby Master's next, newly-tooled aircraft. Earlier today, the cat was let-out-of-the-bag when we learned that they planned to offer a 1:72 scale rendition of the illustrious F-105 Thunderchief. Developed by Republic Aviation, the same makers of the Thunderbolt, Thunderstreak and Thunderjet combat aircraft, the Thunderchief was quite literally the workhorse of the USAF during the early portion of the Vietnam Conflict, capable of carrying twice the bombload of the F-100 Super Sabre. The first F-105D "Thud" (#HA2501) is now available for pre-order, and we believe this model could easily become their best-selling plane of 2009...[posted 3/12/2009]

Military History: Who's Driving The Plane?
I used to think it strange that modelmakers would offer a diecast metal rendition of the De Havilland Mosquito, a plane made largely of plywood. Seemed odd from my vantagepoint until I read this month's Popular Mechanics magazine, which shed light on the flight testing of the Northrop Grumman X-47B, an unmanned strike aircraft designed to fly off the deck of an aircraft carrier. The X-47B's sea trials on a carrier are slated to occur in late 2011, and if all goes according to plan, production aircraft will likely follow suit, with the goal of replacing the fleet of aging F/A-18 still in service.

Now here's the rub. As an aviation enthusiast and collector of replica combat aircraft, would you be inclined to purchase a model based upon an unmanned aircraft? Granted, there have been models of drones and war weary aircraft offered in the past, but these have largely come at the tail end of the development cycle for an actual production aircraft, such as a F-4 Phantom II or B-17 Flying Fortress, when all of the more popular castings were already made. But with the pilot removed from the outset for both the X-47A and B models, somehow I wonder if collectors would poo-poo the idea of purchasing an aircraft replica bereft of its driver. Food for thought as we move further into the second century of manned flight...[posted 3/10/2009]

The Collectors Showcase Takes the Point
Many military enthusiasts dont realize that a good portion of the German war machine was made up of captured vehicles and weapons produced by a number of allied nations. In the case of the Italian-built Autoblinda AB 43, this four-wheeled armored car was used extensively by the Wehrmacht to supplement their reconnaissance arm, since recon teams were oftentimes the first units to come in contact with enemy formations on a mobile battlefield. So, instead of offering an Italian decorated AB 43, The Collectors Showcase has opted to come out with three different German esconced vehicles, one for the DAK, another operating in Normandy and a third serving with a Wehrmacht unit during the Battle of the Bulge. Each vehicle comes with three figures, and, as you might expect, features fully detailed interior compartments and stunningly realistic paint schemes. Look for the new sets to come out sometime in April...[posted 3/10/2009]

The Collectors Showcase Washing of the Spears
The invasion and subsequent subjugation of the Zulu nation by the British Empire is perhaps one of the most celebrated campaigns of the nineteenth century, showing how a small but professionally led force could take on a native army much larger in size and scope. Taking its cue from history, The Collectors Showcase has decided to pay homage to the opening action of the war by releasing a set of figures based upon the slaughter at the slopes of Mount Isandlwana. Crafted in 1:30 scale and hand painted to exacting standards, the Zulu War series will no doubt become an eagerly sought after miniature set when it comes out this spring and will likely be expanded to include the ensuing Battle at Rorke's Drift...[posted 3/9/2009]

Solidly built and replete with opening doors, flags and chrome appointments, these hefty 1:18 scale parade limousines are being offered at the incredible price of $49.99 apiece, making them affordable tributes to the presidential conveyances, several of which have become etched into our collective conciousness through historical events...[posted 3/8/2009]

Easy Model Churns Up the Early War Diecast Battlefield
Nowadays, most makers of World War II military replicas seem to concentrate on the latter half of the war, when the Germans were fielding heavier tanks and the Allies were producing weapons to stand up to them. Its therefore refreshing to see at least one model maker not turn a blind eye to the opening campaigns of the Second World War and the weaponry employed in the early battles.

That said, Easy Model is looking to produce a replica of the famed French Char B-1bis heavy tank, a weapon that was purportedly built to stand toe-to-toe against the German PzKpfw II and III, yet was significantly outclassed once the first shots were fired. Images for the three replicas are expected momentarily and we anticipate a March ship, so it behooves anyone interested in obtaining these models to submit their orders as soon as possible...[posted 2/25/2009]

Armour Collection Takes Its Cue from the JSF
We had been under the impression that Armour Collection was going to offer a F-111 Aardvark for 2009. However, when the 2009 catalog arrived, no mention was made of the "Aardvark", and in its stead, the Company plans to introduce a 1:48 scale replica of the USAF F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Dubbed the Lightning II, the Armour Collection replica (B11F000) is slated to take wing in March, and looks to be the first pre-assembled model portraying the soon-to-be made operational strike aircraft available in diecast form.
