Corgi AA39405 RAF Vickers Valiant B(PR)Mk.1 Strategic Bomber - WZ365, 1B Squadron RAF Finningley South Yorkshire December 1959 (1:144 Scale)
"In the future, war will be waged essentially against the unarmed populations of the cities and great industrial centers."
- Italian General Giulio Douhet
The Vickers-Armstrongs Valiant was a British four-jet bomber, once part of the Royal Air Force's V bomber nuclear force in the 1950s and 1960s. The Valiant was originally developed for use as high-level strategic bomber, but its role, like other V bombers, was changed to low-level attacks.
Low-level flying brought a number of serious problems as the Valiant's wing spar attachment castings showed premature fatiguing and inter-crystalline corrosion traced to the use of an inappropriate type of aluminium alloy. The Valiant had been the first of the V bombers to become operational, and its role was already shifting to that of a tanker. Rather than repair or rebuild the fleet, the Valiant was grounded and the Handley Page Victor took over the tanker role.
Pictured here is a RAF Vickers Valiant B(PR)Mk.1 Strategic Bomber that was attached to 1B Squdron then deployed to RAF Finningley, South Yorkshire, during December 1959.

Historical Account: "Valiant Performance" - One of the many Valiants to have something of a turbulent service life, WZ365 ranks among only a select group of Valiants to perform at the Farnborough Air Show, performing a flypast there with three other machines prior to its delivery to 232 Operational Conversion Unit based at RAF Gaydon in 1955. While serving there it suffered a canopy separation on June 6th, 1956, and after repairs, was transferred to 199 Squadron RAF Wyton. It remained with the Squadron until its final operational move to 18 Squadron at RAF Finningley on January 25th, 1959. It was with this unit that the aircraft was to see out the last of its days, moving in April 1963 to St Athan for storage as a non-effective aircraft. It was scrapped in 1965 along with nearly all of the other Valiants. Plagued by structural issues, their time as an effective V-bomber was over and only one survives today.
