On August 18th, 1944, an order was placed for 100 Ostwind ("East Wind") anti-aircraft vehicles, after successful trials had been held the previous month. Replacing the Wirbelwind, the Ostwind I provided the panzertruppen with the more effective 3.7cm FlaK43 gun mounted within an armored turret.
