Dragon DRR61039 German Sd. Kfz. 171 PzKpfw V Panther Ausf. G Medium Tank with Four Figures - "Red 301", Panzer Regiment 26, Panzer Grenadier Division "Grossdeutschland", France, 1944 (1:35 Scale) "If the tank succeeds, then victory follows."
- Major-General Heinz Guderian, "Achtung Panzer!"

In many respects, the Panther tank was viewed as the finest armored fighting vehicle of the Second World War. Based in large part upon the Soviet's highly successful T-34 medium tank, the PzKpfw V Ausfuhrung G was built by several manufacturers including MAN, Daimler-Benz and MNH. Mounting a fearsome 7.5cm KwK42 L/70 cannon and two 7.92mm MG34 machineguns, the Panther Ausf. G represented the third and certainly the most impressive installment in the Panther series.

This model represents a Panther Ausf.G of 1./Panzer Regiment 26, of the "Grossdeutschland" (which translates as 'Greater Germany') Division. This division was an elite army formation and was equipped with the best German equipment available. While the division fought exclusively on the Eastern Front in the latter years of WWII, various units came and went. In June 1944 at the time of the Allied landings in Normandy, 1./Pz.Rgt .26 was based in France in order to train on Panthers. The unit's Panthers were quickly thrown into the attack to stem the build up of Allied forces, and this is the time period depicted by this model. This latest addition to the Dragon Armor range lives up to the high standard set by its predecessors, and it will have collectors meowing with pleasure! Comes with four figures. Sold Out!

Historical Account: "Greater Germany" - On June 23rd, 1943, Infanterie Division "Grossdeutschland" was officially re-classified as a Panzergrenadier Division. The two infantry regiments became known as Panzer Grenadier Regiment Grossdeutschland and Panzer Fusilier Regiment Grossdeutschland. Interestingly, both units retained their white arm-of-service or branch color (waffenfarbe) rather than the new grass-green piping adopted by the panzergrenadiers. Involved in Operation: Zitadelle, Panzer Grenadier Division Grossdeutschland was, in actuality, a full-fledged panzer division since it was one of only a handful of units equipped with a battalion of Tiger tanks. After Kursk, the unit fought on the Dniepr Line, and by early 1944 was fighting in the north, retreating into East Prussia and Latvia as the Russian onslaught continue to gather momentum.

In November 1944, the Grossdeutschland Division was still regarded as a Panzergrenadier division, although other units within its 'sphere of influence' were expanded to form the Panzerkorps Grossdeutschland.
