The Jagdpanzer IV was developed as an improved version of the StuG III and was eventually supposed to replace it. A soft steel model was presented to Hitler in October 1943, and a final prototype submitted for his approval some two months later. Vomag was called upon to produce the Jagdpanzer IV even though the Waffenant still needed their versatile PzKpfw IV medium tanks. In May 1944, production of the PzKpfw IV ended, which enabled Vomag to concentrate their full resources on the Jagdpanzer IV. From January to November 1944, some 769 vehicles were produced, first seeing action with the Hermann Goring Division in Italy. The Jagdpanzer's low silhouette, thick frontal armor, and high-powered 7.5cm PaK42 L/70 cannon made it an ideal tank-killing machine.
