The first Panhard appeared in 1977, based on technology developed for a 1970 French Army requirement for an armored car that was designed but never actually used. Production began in 1979, and the vehicle was quickly exported to Nigeria, Argentina, and Iraq, with the French using it as part of their Rapid Intervention Force. The vehicle was fully amphibious and produced in both a four- and six wheeled variant. On the six-wheeled version, the center wheels could be raised and lowered to deal with different types of terain. The Panhard features a huge 90mm gun and one 7.62 coaxial machine gun housed in the turret. Both variants are equipped with a laser rangefinder, night vision equipment, and a land navigation system, and fitted with a pressurized nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) defense system.
