The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was unquestionably the most famous and formidable bombing aircraft of the Second World War. During the War, these bombers were primarily used in the Pacific theater. The first Boeing B-29 bomber entered into service for the US Air Force in September 1943 and the last B-29 retired from service in September 1960. Currently there are 18 E-3A's operating with the NATO Airborne Early Warning Force and 5 more serving in the Royal Saudi Air Force. Equipped with advanced surveillance radars, the aircraft can be employed to monitor aircraft, low-flying cruise missiles and ships. The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft designed and built originally by Lockheed, now Lockheed Martin. Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medical evacuation, and cargo transport aircraft. The Lockheed SR-71 was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed A-12 and YF-12A aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. The SR-71 was unofficially named the Blackbird, and called the Habu by its crews. The US Air Force's only serving variable-sweep wing aircraft is the B-1 Lancer bomber. The futuristic design was originally conceived in order to create a long-range, low-level, supersonic penetrator bomber that could deliver nuclear weapons.
