The Special Air Service (SAS) is the principal special force organization of the British Army, often regarded as the best organization of its kind in the world. During World War II, the SAS played a very important role against the German Army. The ending of the Cold War saw a 40% cut in manpower of the British Army, as outlined in the Options for Change review. Despite this, the Army has been deployed in an increasingly global role. The 50th Northumberland Division was sent to France in 1940 as a Territorial Army division, and was involved in the evacuation at Dunkirk. It saw service in the Western Desert Campaign ,losing one of it's brigades ( British 150th Infantry Brigade ), and then was involved in the Sicily landings of 1943.
