It was designed in the 1980s and adopted for service in the Russian army in 1995. It is currently manufactured by the Progress company of Arseniev.

A second one with two AI-24W engines made its first flight on September 17th, 1962. After few changes it was introduced into the Soviet Air Force by 1967 as Mi-8.

The AAFSS program was cancelled in 1972.
