"I get a call from Ducati asking if I was interested in the ride. I didn't need asking twice...!"
- Troy Bayliss, after being approached by the Ducati Factory to replace the injured "King Carl" Fogarty
As in the year before, Spaniard Ruben Xaus, born in Barcelona in 1978, competed during the Superbike World Championship 2002 for the Ducati - "Infostrada" - Team. His bike was prepared at Ducati's Racing Department in Bologna.
The Ducati 998R "Testastretta" is equipped with a water-cooled two cylinder - 4 cycle - fuel injected engine. It has a cubic capacity of 999 cc and an output of approx. 188 bhp @ 12.500 rpm. The maximum speed is in excess of 300 kph. One special feature of the engine is the "desmodromic" valve operation. This system of force operation works without valve springs, the valves are operated directly by cam lobes and/or rocker arms. The camshaft is driven by a toothed belt, as customary for Ducati engines.
In 1993 Ruben Xaus participated in his first motorbike race. His first race on a Superbike was during the German Superbike Championship in 1998. For the following two years he participated in the Supersport WC and from 2001 onwards he started as a works driver for Ducati, competing in the Superbike WC.
During the 2002 season, consisting of 26 races held in 9 different countries, Ruben Xaus collected 249 points (two 2nd and eight 3rd place finishes) and was listed 6th in the overall standings. With a total of 575 points the Ducati team was awarded the Manufacturers' title.
