Description Extended Information
Minichamps MIN122161500 1978 Honda CBX1000 Sports Touring Motorcycle - Silver (1:12 Scale) "German precision engineering at its finest!"
- The Motor Pool

The CBX is a motorcycle series built by Honda, notable primarily for its novel inline-six cylinder 1000cc engine. Fast, heavy, complicated and powerful, the CBX1000 was an expensive technological tour de force by Honda and remains a sought-after collectible in the present day. It started life as an unfaired 'sports' bike, but was really too heavy for this. Honda later added a fairing, retuned the engine, changed the suspension, and the bike was reclassified as a sports tourer.

Also available were the CBX750 and CBX550. The 550 featured inboard disc brakes that were designed to mitigate problems caused by wet weather braking. The system was less accessible for servicing than conventional disc brakes and there were also heat dissipation problems. Modern braking materials rendered any improvement obsolete. All models featured air-cooled, DOHC engines with CV carburettors.

Historical Account: "Fun in the Sun" - Failing to capture its intended audience, Honda switched gears and headed the CBX into the sport touring category. Adding a sleek fairing and custom-fitted panniers and, detuning the engine to 100 bhp (75 kW)to conforn with US regulations transformed the six-cylinder machine into a reasonable sport tourer, with its smooth engine providing effortless cruising at more than 160 km/h (100 mph).

Comfort also came to this later model from its air-adjustable fork and rear shock which could be tuned to the demands of the rider. Honda decided that dual stainless-alloy ventilated front rotors (a first for the motorcycle industry) were needed to stop its 272 kg (600 pound) weight. Sadly, the sport/touring CBX still generated poor sales numbers and was discontinued. The US government regulations at the time had a lot to do with the CBX's demise.

Although it lasted only five years, its style did give birth both to Honda's sport bikes and to its Honda ST series (viz. ST1100, ST1300 Pan European). The CBX was a rare failure in the US market for mighty Honda but elsewhere had reasonable sales success, this was due to US government regulations at the time. The late 70's were wrought with government regulations along with insurance restrictions that made the production and importation of the CBX unprofitable.
