When the first Camaro appeared in 1967, it was rolled out to pace the famous Indianapolis 500, and two years later it was back once again in convertible form to do the same. The limited edition --of which only 3,675 were made -- was available by ticking the Z11 option which, priced at $37, got you the racing stripes and door decals. To make a replica pace car you also had to tick the SS package, which meant a cowl induction hood and rear spolier, plus order the hidden headlight RS grill. The actual machine which paced the event had a 375bhp (280kw) 396ci (6,489cc) V8, but in the interests of driveability, most of the replicas came with small-block 350ci (5,735cc) V8s, which still churned out plenty of power. Chevy Rallye wheels at 7 inches wide improved handling and a Posi-traction live rear axle ensured maximum grip from a standing start.
