In 1966, when the prototype of the "Munch" motorbike was presented for the first time to a small audience, motorbike riding was out of fashion. Nevertheless, master mechanic Friedel Munch made his dream come true and built a new motorbike. He had the idea of building a motor bike with a four cylinder engine. So, the air-cooled engine - a special feature of the NSU Prinz 1000TT, which had just been introduced - did suit his plans perfectly. As a pattern for the frame he chose the classical double loop frame, into which the engine was installed tranversely.
The primary and gear casing as well as the voluminous oil pan of 5.5 litres capacity were quite impressive. In order to save weight these parts were cast of electron, a magnesium alloy normally used for aircraft construction. This material is much lighter than aluminium, but nevertheless more robust. With regard to the wheels Munch relied on a proven 18" high shoulder rim equipped with a Duplex racing brake. At the rear wheel he fitted an electron cast wheel. Thus, the "Munch-4" was the first street bike with a cast rim. In those days the "Munch TTS" featuring an engine capacity of 1085 cc, an output of 55 bhp and a maximum speed of 180 km/h - was the most powerful, fastest and most expensive mass production motorbike of the world.

Historical Account: "Mammoth" - In 1966, Friedel Mnch presented the first prototype of its MUNCH-Mammut: He had designed an enormous motorbike around the motor of the NSU Prinz. Unfortunately, as enthusiastic engineer and designer, Friedel Munch paid little attention to the profitability of his company. Financial problems regularly accompanied the production of its motorcycles, but with the support of the different partners production could be maintained at all times.
